English Language Arts - 8

Eighth grade English Language Arts (ELA) has several units of study. Within each study students are taught the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking that will enable them to be lifelong learners. The first unit of study focuses on a review of both reading comprehension strategies as well as test taking strategies that students will utilize throughout the year. Fiction is the first type of genre students will encounter. The theme of this unit is finding ourselves. The writing focus of this unit is responding to literature. This writing skill is essential for students to understand. It is a skill that will be practiced all year long. Drama is the second genre to be taught within the theme of meeting dangers. Students will be asked to write a personal narrative in this unit. The theme of living with words is taught in the poetry unit. Students will not only be reading poetry, but will be writing it as well. Non-fiction is the fourth type of genre taught in the eighth grade. The theme of this unit is looking back. Persuasive writing is taught within this unit as well. The final unit has the theme of a year in review. A novel study and a career research report are the two major activities within this unit. Throughout the year students will also participate in both Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop. Students will be assessed both informally and formally throughout the year. A common assessment will be given to all eighth graders upon completion of each unit of study.
