More About Our Department

Hamtramck Public Schools is committed to being an Energy Star School District!

Presently, there are (24) full-time (union) custodians and (5) part-time (non-union) custodians working for our department.  Head custodians are responsible for maintaining inventory, minor repairs, snow removal (around building perimeter), writing work orders, scheduling summer cleaning activity, cafeteria cleanup, evaluating and communicating building and staff needs, building setups, and task-oriented cleaning.  Night custodians are responsible for specific area assignments, minor maintenance, evening setups and building security.

Our maintenance personnel consists of  (1) plumbers, (1) HVAC, (1) electrician, (3) grounds maintenance individuals and (1) recreation individual.

All custodial and maintenance personnel with Hamtramck Schools receive yearly training on hazardous communication and blood borne pathogens as well as specialized training on new equipment or procedures.   Maintenance personnel are given the opportunity to take classes specific to their trade or keep their licensing current.  All schools now have an indexed Material Safety Data Sheets' book containing information on custodial chemicals that are used in their facility.

The summer of 2011, the District will be moving our Dickinson West Elementary Building from the address on Caniff to the portable classrooms on the grounds of Kosciuszko Middle School. The portable classrooms will support the first through fourth grades, while the main building will be making room for the fifth and sixth grades. Holbrook Elementary will be adding a kindergarten class along with a seventh grade. Dickinson East Elementary will be adding a kindergarten.

Also starting at the March Board of Education meeting a contract will be awarded to enter into an Energy Saving Contract. In the contract new heating boiler will be installed in the Community Center replacing the old ones that are (31) years old, new ones for our Early Childhood Center that is (32) years old and replace one of the heating boiler at the High School that is (27) years old, along with the hot water boiler and changing it to an instant on hot water system. They will replace and/or retro-fit some of lighting in the District. Last but not least in this Energy Saving program they will work on the heating and ventilation control thru out all of buildings to make it a much more comfortable learning environment.
