Title 1 Supplemental Reading

In supplemental reading class, the goal is to help students increase their reading levels.  This includes reviewing basic decoding skills like phonics and chunking.  Also, we use fiction and non-fiction literature to teach reading skills such as: predicting, questioning, thinking-aloud and visualization.  Part of Supplemental Reading is also writing.  Students practice creating summaries of book titles, and also they are taken step-by-step through writing narrative and information essays.  Through writing students are also re-taught the basic skills of grammar, punctuation and spelling.  Students in the Supplemental Reading class are also assessed on their progress monthly and quarterly using various tests such as: NWEA, Grade A+, and other formative assessments.  The Supplemental Reading teacher “pushes-in” to classes to service students either not able to be serviced through and actual Reading Class.  Students are also “pulled-out” for one on one instruction due to behavior and time restraints.  The Supplemental Reading Class serves as one of students’ two electives.  If students show significant progress through testing and core subject grades, they are moved out to other classes or electives.
