When I was twelve years old, my family immigrated to the United States from the Albanian part of former Yugoslavia, presently known as Montenegro. My parents and I, along with my brother and sister settled in Detroit. My parents were soon employed in an automobile factory and we enrolled in school to learn the English language.

My first year in an American school was attending ESL (English as a Second Language) classes in the Detroit Public Schools. It was a class made up of students of different age levels and ethnic background. It was, during this time, that I began to see what America was all about. I began to appreciate its beauty of diversity and multiculturalism.

The next year, when I became more fluent in the English language, I enrolled at Northeastern High School and graduated with honors. My experience in high school was very pleasant. Not only did I continue to learn more of the language, which would have a profound effect in my chosen career, but soon I was invited to join the football team. At that time, soccer-style kickers were in great demand.

After high school graduation I attended Wayne State University where I received a BA in English and a Master of Arts in Teaching English Language and Literature. In 1983 I began my teaching career at Hamtramck High School. For the next 23 years I taught a variety of subjects which included ESL, English Literature, American Literature and Social Studies. I enjoyed being in the classroom very much. During my tenure at HHS I was also given many opportunities to substitute for the building administrator during his absence. I soon discovered that being an “educational leader” one can make a greater difference on a different Level. Therefore, I returned to school and attained an Educational Specialist in Administration and in 2007 I became the Principal of Kosciuszko Middle School, and as the saying goes, “the rest is history.”
